汽车作为目前主要的交通工具，由于载客数量较多，火灾风险大且逃生时间较长，所以对汽车内饰的阻燃性能和防火性能的要求也比较高。汽车内饰中的绝大多数，都具备可燃性，如果不采取一些手段，延缓这些可燃材质的燃烧速度，在发生意外时，后果会比较严重。正因如此，各国都针对汽车内饰材料的燃烧特性做出了相应的标准。
